Oneida Carrying Place Sculpture
Lawrence Swiader

The Oneida Carry (or The Great Carrying Place) was the English name for the portage path between the Mohawk River and Wood Creek. The Oneida, a founding member of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, called the place De-o-Wain-Sta. The carry was a part of the major water route between New York City and Canada. It was between one to six miles in length depending on the season of the year.

The sculpture found at the site sits at the center of the Oneida Carry. It was a vital mode of transportation, trade, and commerce that connected Wood Creek to the Mohawk River before and during the Revolutionary War. The sculpture was dedicated on May 25, 2021.
