This preserved 300-acre battlefield park, operated by the Virginia Military Institute, showcases core areas from the Battle of New Market. On May 15, 1864, about 6,000 Federals under Maj. Gen. Franz Sigel clashed with 4,500 Confederates led by Maj. Gen. John Breckenridge here. The Confederate forces included the Virginia Military Institute’s Corps of Cadets. Core areas from the battle are preserved, such as the Field of Lost Shoes, Union and Confederate positions, Woodson’s Missourians Monument, and the 54th Pennsylvania Monument. The site also features the Virginia Museum of the Civil War, the historic Bushong Farm, and a portion of the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources’ Bird & Wildlife Trail.
