President James Monroe invited the Marquis de Lafayette to visit the United States, his adopted country. Lafayette’s tour of all 24 states in 1824 and 1825 drew large crowds and sparked a renewal of patriotism. During the American Revolution, Lafayette’s intense advocacy of the American cause convinced King Louis XVI of France to send troops and ships, which proved crucial to the American victory at Yorktown.
Lafayette's visit to New Hampshire on June 28, 1825, truly shone during his memorable stop in Concord, where over 700 enthusiastic attendees gathered for a dinner on the State House lawn. The evening was filled with 13 formal toasts celebrating the colonies, countless informal toasts, and songs, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and celebration. Lafayette arrived from Claremont, New Hampshire, and crossed the Cornish Bridge (today’s Cornish-Windsor Covered Bridge) over the Connecticut River into Vermont.
